Published! Passion and Persistence Pay Off

About a month ago an email arrived in my Inbox from ART ASCENT – a new online and print publication focused on visual and written arts. The email announced a competition for their upcoming issue with the theme – Mother Earth. How timely, I thought. I had just finished the final edit on Mother Earth -Mother of Us All,  to be read at a special event in May.

The ART ASCENT competition had a 500 word limit; my piece totaled 1400! I would need to cut and slash my writing down to the bare essentials.  Could I do it? I wondered.

After several hours of painstaking re-writing I managed to reach the goal while preserving the message and spirit of the original piece.  Friends and fellow writers believed in my short composition. Their support encouraged me to submit it to the competition.

Can you imagine my surprise and excitement when I opened an email from Art Ascent on July 17 to read this:

Writers – Gold – Wendie Donabie.

I WON!

It’s a small yet significant step. Now I’m published. My piece, Mother of Us All, (along with the two writing runners-up and the art winners) is available in the August issue of ART ASCENT Magazine.  http://www.magcloud.com/browse/magazine/573575

What I’ve Learned: When I write with passion, I connect with readers; without it my writing is just words on paper.
